Managing organisational change

Organisational change is constant.

Occasionally a global, market or business crisis will deem it vital to restructure your business to adapt to external market changes. As a leader, how you proactively manage it will have repercussions on employee moral and motivation for years to come.

Leadership Essentials 

1. Create a plan. People hate uncertainty. Even in the most uncertain of times having a sense of a plan and a series of action steps will help keep people focused to prevent panic. If you can invite participation, however small on the plan even better.

2. Communicate clearly and often. Share all the information you can, together with your reasoning. It’s important to keep communication lines open with your people even when there is nothing new to stay. You being there will provide consistency and reassurance.

3. Show your human side. Be positive where appropriate. If you’re finding it difficult, share how you feel, to help people relate to you. It’s  important to share any early successes to keep people motivated and positive that things will get better.

People don’t resist change per say, they resist loss of status, pay, comfort and familiarity.

The Coaching Approach

Truly understand your current reality. Creativity will come from your teams ability to close the gap between where you are now and where you all want to be. How curious are you? What advantages do you imagine will come from tackling the ‘undiscussibles’ and pre-existing beliefs?

Map it out. It might help to map out your teams need states. What are their natural reactions to change? What roles might they play? What support do each of them need?

Who are you focusing on?  Consider who will follow first rather than those who are most resistant to change. What are you role modelling?

Are your expectations realistic? For yourself and your team? How can you better manage expectations? 

How can you celebrate small wins and share new knowledge. Can you delegate this to others in your team to spur motivation?

Consider personality traits. Your team all have different generic personality traits that impact how they react to change. Have you considered adopting tools like the Myers Briggs Type Indicator?
